Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Many products you use in your home and yard contain hazardous materials. Improper disposal of household chemicals can pose a threat to health, and contaminate land, air and water supplies. Also mishandling of some of these materials can cause fires, and serious injuries to people and animals.

Examples of these materials include:

  • paint, gasoline, paint thinners, solvents (flammable)
  • pesticides, cleaning products (poisonous)
  • acids, bases, cleaning products (corrosive)
  • flares, pool chemicals (reactive)
  • other – fluorescent lights, ballasts, computers and electronics, cooking oil, propane tanks, oil, antifreeze, batteries

Whenever possible, avoid purchasing such items. Explore alternative products that are environmentally friendly and safer. If you must purchase, buy in quantities for immediate use.

Collection programs for these hazardous materials are commonly referred to as "Clean Sweep" programs. These programs began as one-day programs and continue in many parts of Wisconsin. Other communities have decided to provide a higher level of service to residents through seasonal or year round programs.

Follow the links below for information on programs in Southeastern Wisconsin and facilities in your community that collect these hazardous products for proper disposal.
