For the past two years the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has been compiling a GIS-based catalog of state drainage districts. There is considerable interest from landowners, state agencies, local governments, and others in knowing where the boundaries of these drainage districts are located. This is of particular relevance to comprehensive planning, because the Comprehensive Planning Law's definition of a comprehensive plan was amended in 2007 to include drainage districts. We now have a web-based mapping application that allows users to locate a drainage district or get more detailed information about a district or a county drainage board: http://datcpgis.wi.gov/DrainageDistricts.
For those of you interested in a shapefile of statewide drainage districts, right-click https://datcpgis.wi.gov/DrainageDistricts/FTP.htm and open in a new window. (Note: Going directly to the web page or using the "FTP Info" button in the web application are "unfriendly" with most web browsers.)
DATCP couldn't have created the statewide drainage district data layer without much assistance from county land information, land conservation, and engineering staff, as well as several drainage district boards, consulting firms, and regional planning commissions. Many thanks to those who provided copies of legal documents, GIS layers, paper maps, specifications, and other information, and to those who helped develop and test the drainage district GIS data layer and web-mapping application.
The drainage district layer was compiled from "best available" information from multiple sources, and DATCP attempted to verify all information and resolve discrepancies with local sources. We plan to update the GIS layer and web application as new information becomes available. If you have any questions or comments about the boundary or status of a drainage district, please contact Seth McClure:
